Learning to Love Your Own Company

I’m excited to share a transformative topic close to my heart: learning to love your own company. Whether you’re living alone by choice, circumstance, or during a life transition, embracing your solitude can be an empowering journey. In this post, we’ll explore how to shift your perspective from loneliness to fulfilment, and offer practical steps to help you see solitude as a powerful, positive part of life.

Redefining Solitude: From Loneliness to Self-Discovery.

In our society, solitude is often associated with loneliness, especially for those of us in midlife. We’re conditioned to believe that constantly being surrounded by others is ideal, while being alone is something to be avoided. But solitude is not a punishment or something to dread. Instead, it’s an incredible opportunity for self-discovery, creativity, and inner peace.

Over the years, I’ve come to see solitude as a space to reconnect with my own thoughts and desires without external influences; in fact I’ll go as far to say that solitude is additionally a potential opportunity for re-integrating yourself and your life. It’s in these quiet moments that I (and many others) have found a deeper understanding of ourselves. Let’s reframe solitude as a time for nurturing our inner lives, offering room for personal growth.

Let me ask you: What do you enjoy doing when you have the space to do as you please? Solitude can give you the freedom to explore activities that bring joy and fulfilment. Instead of focusing on what may be missing, you can turn alone time into a period of genuine self-enrichment.

Embracing the Journey to Enjoying Solitude.

For many, including myself, solitude didn’t always feel comfortable or welcome. There was a time when I felt unsure about being alone and relied on distractions like TV, music, or other temporary comforts to avoid it. Over time, though, I learned that solitude could actually be a doorway to self-discovery and strength.

This shift wasn’t instantaneous or easy, but gradually I began to see the value in spending time with myself, reading, reflecting, and growing in my own way. I discovered that true fulfilment didn’t require external validation—it could come from within.

Practical Tips for Embracing Your Own Company.

If learning to enjoy your own company feels challenging, you’re not alone! Here are a few steps to help you get started:

• Create a Routine That Nurtures You: Establish a daily ritual that feels nourishing, whether it’s a physical, spiritual or mental one. Start somewhere, even if your life is busy. This is about you. Small acts of self-care help you associate solitude with positive, enriching experiences.

• Embrace New Learning : This can be the perfect time to explore passions that are just for you. Whatever it is, take time to find out.. finding activities that engage your curiosity can make your time alone feel purposeful and rewarding.

• Practice Mindfulness (this translates also as create new awareness to self and surroundings) and Meditation, even if for a short amount of time per day: These practices keep you present, helping you enjoy your own company without reaching for external distractions. Even a few minutes a day can increase self-awareness and comfort with solitude.

For those interested in diving deeper into these practices, I offer workshops where we cover powerful techniques for personal growth. These workshops provide a supportive environment for you to develop the tools and confidence to thrive in your own company.

Overcoming the Fear of Solitude.

It’s common to feel apprehensive about being alone. Many of us connect solitude with feelings of emptiness, but solitude can be reframed as a time to connect with yourself deeply. By doing so, you may find inner peace and a sense of fulfilment that’s rooted in self-connection.

If solitude feels overwhelming, start small—spend just a few minutes each day in quiet or doing something you love. If you don’t consciously know what you love. Spend at least 15mins daily to sit with yourself undisturbed. When we relax, insights come to us freely. As you continue, you’ll likely begin to value this time as a chance for personal growth and self-discovery.

Learning to love your own company is one of the most rewarding journeys you can embark upon. Solitude doesn’t have to be feared or avoided—it can be a precious gift, offering you the chance to build a stronger relationship with the most important person in your life: you.
